What
is "holistic" photography instruction?
Whether David is working with his group workshops or tours, or
with his private clients, he leaves no stone unturned in his quest
to help his students become well-rounded, fully-competent photographers.
In true Asheville style, he takes a holistic approach to his instructional
services, allowing his clients to grow multi-dimensionally, while
keeping things easily understandable and fun.
His
instruction begins with understanding the importance of quality
gear (cameras, lenses, accessories and computer
hardware / software) as well as understanding the limitations
of lower-level equipment. But, owning high-end gear
by no means guarantees high-end imagery, nor does owning lower-level
gear prevent one from creating top-quality photos.
Of
equal importance, is the David's emphasis on technical
competency in using the gear. There is no use in
having a bag full of expensive gadgets if the photographer limits
him/herself to just the "automatic" functions.
This is particularly important when it comes to understanding
"exposure" controls (aperture / shutter
speed / ISO). But, with today's advanced technology, it
is also essential to understand other facets of a camera's operation,
such as auto-focus and white balance.
Of
course, understanding digital editing and having a sound "digital
workflow" from capture to archive is also of high
importance to the modern photographer -- both hobbyists and
professionals alike -- so David includes in his repertoire
detailed guidance in the use of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom as well
as other digital editing software.
Decent
gear and technical knowledge can only take a photographer so far.
Without a sense of "good" composition,
a photographer's results will still fall short. So, to complete
the skill-set, David works with his clients to develop their "creative"
side and, in essence, he teaches them how to see differently.
In a digital world that can be somewhat overwhelming, this is
always a very enjoyable extension of David's service.
Finally,
none of these essential, inter-connected skills would be very
effective if David didn't inspire in his students a passion
for photography. By sharing his vast knowledge
of the craft -- while holding nothing back -- David's
clients not only take away a wealth of creative skills, but they
also develop an insatiable appetite for this wonderful and ever-expanding
art form.
